User Types, Account Types, User Tags, and Hubs
Understand the different ways CampusGroups categorizes and differentiates platform users
CampusGroups provides a number of ways to categorize and differentiate users:
User Types
Several standard user types are included in the platform:
- Students: The majority of users, typically fully-enrolled students. Examples: Undergraduate Student, Graduate Student, Off-Campus Student
- Admin/Staff: Typically the second largest number of users. Examples: Staff, Faculty, Employee. Users from this group can be granted the system admin role, with access to create, edit, and manage all areas of the platform.
- Alumni: Users who have graduated but still have a presence within your platform. Examples: Participants in targeted events like reunions, mentors, recipients of fundraising communications.
- Friend: Users who do not fall into the above groups, but have some affiliation with your campus. Examples: Parent/Family, Partner/Spouse, Visiting Students, Community Partner.
- Other/Guest: Anyone not included in the above groups. This is the only user type that can be automatically assigned platform visitors. All other user types are assigned by the campus / admins.
Account Types
While User Types are not assigned directly to users, each user added to the platform Account Type is assigned an Account Type. Account Types are created in Custom Values, and each Account Type is based on a user type.
For example, Account Types of Undergraduate Student and Graduate Student have the “student” type. Account Types of Staff and Faculty have the “admin” type, etc.

Each user is assigned one Account Type. Account Types are used when filtering lists access rights, assigning access rights Account Types, and in data management.

Note: In User Permissions, you can configure what features of the platform are available to each user type.
User Tags
Tags are another way to categorize users, as well as other items such as events and groups.
For example, User Tags can include “Transfer Student,” “Off-Campus,” etc. Users are not able to choose or edit their User Tags.
Note: User Tags can be assigned manually, and / or can be assigned via SFTP or API from the university Student Information System.
Unlike Account Types, a user can be assigned multiple tags, and tags are also used for filtering, reporting, emailing, and more.

Platform users do not see their own User Tags. However, group officers can see User Tags of their members or contacts, except for tags designated as admin-only. Officers can also create their own Member Tabs.
Hubs
Each institution is provided with one Community Hub What are Community Hubs?. Creating additional community hubs, or partitioned hubs is another way some schools differentiate users and groups. For example, hubs can be set up for multiple campus locations, multiple schools or departments, etc.
To explore hub options, reach out to your CampusGroups Client Success Manager.
Note: There are pros and cons to using tabs or hubs to differentiate users.
